PhD – an Entrepreneur  is a customized course for docoral  students. The course is organized jointly by the Aalto Unviersity graduate schools GETA and RYM-TO and it is planned and created by the Aalto University School of Business, SCB Small Business Centre.

The objective of this training is to improve participants´ over-all information, knowledge and understanding of entrepreneurship and start-up-businesses. It helps participants analyze, what components and competencies are needed to conduct a business successfully.
In addition to transferring knowledge and insights on modern theories of strategic thinking, the program also deals with other skills and competencies such as: how to manage sales in terms of reading, interpreting and analyzing financial reports, how to create value for customers, what are the modern methods in customer-oriented marketing (the role of social media e.g.), how to interact successfully with people of differing style, how to be persuasive, how to manage in time pressure.

Daily schedule:

Lectures 9 - 16
Lunch break 12 - 13
two coffeebreaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Lecturers / Trainers

Trainers/Specialists are all entrepreneurs, and regular lecturers at Aalto University School of Business. The names of the lecturers will be given later.

Training methods

Training is intensive and interactive. Methods of this training program are theoretical lectures, conceptual framework building, and evaluating and commenting individual and group work, during which theoretical considerations will be reflected and implemented into the practice. In addition to this, participants are instructed to read relevant articles, and other literature to study. Orientation study material will be communicated closer to the course.

Way of passing the course

Comprehension of the studies: 2 credits, attendance of the lecturers, active participation in group works and passing the given assignments. Grading: pass/fail.

The course if free of charge to GETA / RYM-TO participants, for to ohers price of the course is 320 EUR (includes coffees and networking lunch). A diploma will be given to all students who have passed the course.

- What knowledge and competences are needed to build up an own company? Steps to build up your own business (finance, company forms, taxation, enterprise support system in general e.g.),
- Entrepreneurial vs. academic profile
- Company presentation

Day 2 Leadership and strategic thinking in value creation, November, 19, 2013, 9:00-16:00
- Strategic and business planning process. How to link strategy to sales?
- Value identification and creation as basis for developing effective marketing strategy
- Importance of defining and understanding of the customer
- Understanding the concept of value and value development
- Competitive advantage and competitive strategies
- Company presentation

Day 3 Sales and marketing skills, November, 20, 2013, 9:00-16:00
- Development of modern marketing
- Customer oriented/centered marketing
- Company presentation

Day 4 Key to business finance, November, 21, 2013, 9:00-16:00
- Key to business finance program (simulation) is engaging, interactive, fun, and creative
- At the end of the program, participants will walk away with an understanding of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow and how each apply to everyday business!

Day 5 Interaction is the key!, November, 22, 2013, 9:00-16:00
- How to convince your customer of your product´s/service excellence
- Assertiveness above all

How to improve your time management
- Organizing daily tasks
- How to plan working hours and build realistic expectations to get things done

The venue of the training

Aalto University School of Business Small Business Center (SBC) was established in 1980 as an SME service center of Helsinki School of Economics, the leading university –level business school in Finland. Our purpose is to improve the efficiency, profitability, and productivity of our customer companies. Our main activities are further education, research, and the activity of Star-Up Center. There are three main topics covered by further training objectives:
